Waiting on Wednesday #2 - August 10.

Hi booklovers

This is created by Breaking the Spine.

For my second Waiting on Wednesday post I'm going to go with 'Gemina' by Amy Kaufman and Jay Kristoff.

I'm reading Illuminae at the moment and although it took me about 100 pages to get used to the format of the book I'm really loving it. I'm even thinking of pre-ordering the book through theyachronicles.com.

This book comes out on the 18th of October.

What book are you excited to be released? Let me know in the comments.

Top 10 Tuesday #2 - August 9.

Hi booklovers

This week's Top Ten Tuesday topic is 'rewind'.
The creators of the meme The Broke and the Bookish compiled a list with almost all the topics of the last six years that we could pick from.

I decided to go with 'Top 10 Auto-buy Authors'. I did a post about this last year, but since then I've discovered a whole bunch of new auto-buy authors.

The two authors that were already on my auto-buy list are:

She writes ya contemporary stories and is the author of The Pushing the Limits and the Thunder Road series. Her PTL series were some of the first YA contemporary stories I read and they made me enjoy the genre very much.

Another (mostly) contemporary writer but this time in the NA genre. I've read all of the books in the Losing it and the Rusk University series and the first (and currently only) book of the Muse series. I'm eagerly awaiting the next books in the RU and the Muse series :-)

These are my other auto-buy authors:

I only need to read the Unexpected Everything and then I will have caught up with her books.

Although I still need to catch up with some of their books, I plan on buying and reading everything these twin sister ever release. The Addicted series is one of my favourite NA contemporary series ever!

Moving on to the fantasy genre. I have read and adored the Grisha trilogy and I plan on reading Six of Crows before Crooked Kingdom comes out.

I really enjoyed the two Snow Like Ashes books that are currently out, so I'm definitely going to read the final installment in the trilogy. And it's safe to say I'll be buying every other books Sara Raasch releases :-)

The same goes for Victoria Aveyard. I really enjoyed Red Queen and Glass Sword. Even though I didn't enjoy Cruel Crown all that much I'm still going to continue with the series and buy every other book she'll release.

Bre is a self-published author and I really enjoy her books. I might be a bit biased, because Bre is a good friend of mine, but she is a good writer and I will always read anything she releases!

And lastly, even though I haven't read Winter or Stars Above yet, I am going to (pre-)order Heartless :-)

Even though I know this is an author I can't buy any new books from since he passed away a couple of years ago, I still own every book in his The Wheel of Time series and I would have bought every other book written by him.

Of course I hope I will add more auto-buy authors to this list.

Who are some of your auto-buy authors? Let me know in the comments.

Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson - spoiler free review.

Hi booklovers

At the beginning of July I continued my Morgan Matson binge-read, so after rereading Amy & Roger and Second Chance Summer, I went straight on to reading Since You've Been Gone. It was the first time I read this one.
Author: Morgan Matson
Genre: ya, contemporary
Format: paperback

*Story:
Imagine one day finding out that your best friend for the last two years has just disappeared without a trace. That's what happens to Emily: her best friend Sloane goes missing. She fruitlessly tries to get in touch with Sloane until she gets a letter from Sloane. Actually, it's not really a letter but more of a list. On this list there are thirteen tasks that Emily has to complete. Some of these 'challenges' make absolutely no sense to her and some are very hard for her to do. But Emily is convinced that she'll find Sloane back when the tasks are completed. And so she finds herself spending her summer holiday doing things she would normally never do.

*Character:
-Emily: She's a girl who, at the beginning of the story, is completely lost without her best friend Sloane. It very soon becomes clear that Emily depended on Sloane for a lot of things and at the same time stood in Sloane's shadow. Throughout the story, however, she becomes more and more extroverted by doing things that are totally out of her comfort zone. She almost becomes a totally different person and she actually likes who she is becoming - up until one certain event in the story, that is.

-Sloane: We mostly get to know her through flashbacks and at one point I started to really dislike her because how she treated Emily when she was with Sam. But as you get to know her better, you can tell that she's not really the extrovert, carefree person she pretends to be.

-Frank Porter: He's this very serious, smart guy with a steady girlfriend who suddenly appears in Emily's life. They start to hang out together and Frank helps Emily out with a lot of the things on the list. I really like Frank because he's a bit of a complex character: On the outside it looks like he's got everything planned out and he knows what he wants to do/become. But his life is much more complex than you think. I liked how he was a completely different - even more humane - person around Emily than he was at school. Even though we don't see him at school, his behaviour there is hinted at by Emily.

-Collins & Dawn: Collins is Frank's best friend and a really funny character. Dawn works at the pizza place next to the ice cream parlour Emily works at. They accidentally meet, but they become good friends.

*Plot:
This book deals a lot with (emotional) changes and growth. Not only Emily but also Frank and even Collins become these different people throughout the story. I liked the concept of a 'to-do' list to help Emily become a more confident person. I again enjoyed the flashbacks because they help you to get to know Sloane better.

*Overall rating:
I really liked this story, so I gave it 4.5 stars. I didn't give it 5 stars because of one tiny thing that happens near the end of the story. I know it was 'necessary' for the story, but still. I would have liked to have read a bit more about Dawn and Collins, especially towards the end of the story.
SPOILER:
I liked how the relationship between Emily and Frank evolved slowly and it isn't until the last page of the book that they decide to give their relationship a go. I know you could tell they had feelings for each other rather quickly, but still that wasn't the main focus of the story and that was a good thing!

Oh and, yay, I found the Amy Curry (Amy & Roger) reference again. I'm not sure if there is a Second Chance Summer reference or not.

Have you read this book? What did you think of it? Let me know in the comments.

Continuing series before the next book in the series comes out.

Hi booklovers

Today I want to take a look at some of the series that I have already started - or in the case of numbers 1, 3 and 4 own the first book of - but need to catch up on before the next book comes out.

I'm putting these in order of release date:

1)
An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir.
Book 2 'A Torch Against the Night' comes out on the 30th of August.
2) Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas.
Book 5 'Empire of Storms' comes out on the 6th of September.
I started reading QoS during the Fantasy Favourites Readathon at the beginning of July, but put it down after 28 pages. I just couldn't get into the story. Although I had read summaries for all the previous books, I still felt like I couldn't remember enough to dive back into this world. I might reread the entire series, so I'm pretty sure I won't be able to catch up before the 6th of September.

3) Six of Crows
by Leigh Bardugo.
Book 2 in this duology 'Crooked Kingdom' comes out on the 27th of September.
I'm pretty sure I'll be able to read SoC before then :-)

4) Illuminae
by Amy Kaufman and Jay Kristoff.
Book 2 'Gemina' comes out on the 18th of October.
I started Illuminae yesterday, so I've this one covered :-)

5) The Invasion of the Tearling by Erika Johansen.
Book 3 'The Fate of the Tearling' comes out on the 29th of November.
Again, I don't completely remeber what happened in 'The Queen of the Tearling', so I might reread that one first.

6) Frozen Tides
by Morgan Rhodes.
Since 'Crystal Storms' (book 5) doesn't come out 'till the 13th of December I think I might even be able to reread the first three books so I remember how the story goes before continuing.

This may be a bit ambitious, but I'm hoping to at least catch up with a few of these series.

What do you do to catch up with series? Do you reread the previous books or do you use summaries? Let me know in the comments.

Also, I just noticed how stunning all these covers are. I like the Tearling and the Morgan Rhodes ones best! Do you judge books by their cover?

July 2016 - Wrap Up.

Hi booklovers

This is what I read in July. I managed to finish 4 books, almost 5.

*Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson.
I gave this 4.5 stars. I really enjoyed it. I'll hopefully be posting my review very soon.

*The Selection by Kiera Cass.
I gave this 3 stars. I flew through this book. I have to admit that it isn't the best book out there, but it was addictive and so I kept reading. I also need to post my review of this one.

*The Elite by Kiera Cass.
Again 3 stars. I had a lot of problems with America and Prince Maxen, but it was still fast paced. I will continue with the series and maybe even buy the box set.

*ACOTAR by Sarah J. Maas.
The first time I read this book, I gave it 4.5 stars, but now I'm lowering my rating to 4 stars. This time around Feyre got even more on my nerves. Yet another book I will post a review for.

I also read the majority of ACOMAR, but since I finished it on the 2nd of August I will include it in my August wrap-up.

All in all, a good reading month.

What did you read in July? Which was your favourite read of the month?

Waiting on Wednesday #1 - August 3.

Hi booklovers

Today I'm participating in another new (to me) meme: Waiting on Wednesday. This was created by Breaking the Spine.
In Waiting on Wednesday we talk about new releases we are excited about.

A book I'm really looking forward to it being released is Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo.
I haven't read Six of Crows yet, but I adored the Grisha trilogy, so I'm pretty sure I will love this duology too. I'm really looking forward to going back to that world.

So, I definitely plan on reading SoC before Crooked Kingdom comes out, which is the 27th of September.

What book are you looking forward to being released? Let me know in the comments.
